DESCRIPTION:We are excited to share a recap of our recent Hour of Code event\, organized by uOttawa’s ACM-W Student Chapter\, which took place on December 6th\, 2023\, at Elgin Street Public School. \nThis event was specially tailored for grade 3 students\, aiming to introduce them to the exciting world of coding and computer science in a fun and engaging way. The day was filled with interactive activities that allowed the students to explore the basics of programming. From creating their first lines of code to designing simple animations\, the students were eager to learn and experiment with new concepts. \nWe would like to express our gratitude to Elgin Street Public School for hosting us and to all the volunteers who dedicated their time and effort to make this event possible. DESCRIPTION:Advancing New Canadian Women in Technology (ANCWT) is a bridging employment program for new immigrant and refugee women who have technical skills in engineering\, computer science\, and information technology. The program\, hosted at the University of Ottawa\, helps participants to hone their skills\, build a professional network\, and find opportunities to work in Canada. Every module in the program is carefully designed to help newcomers develop a clear understanding of their respective job markets through various expert lectures\, assignments\, and activities. \nANCWT is pleased to announce that we will be conducting a new cohort from October 25th\, 2023\, to November 17th\, 2023. The sessions are scheduled for three days per week (Wednesdays\, Thursdays\, and Fridays) from 12 p.m. to 4 p.m. This cohort will be hybrid\, including both in-person and online sessions. \nIf you are interested in participating in the cohort\, please fill out an application here. SUMMARY:Women in Tech: Talk by Prof. Ita Richardson
DESCRIPTION:TOPIC: Prof. Ita Richardson will talk on 2 topics\, 15 min each\, followed by Q&A. \n1- Women in Engineering – bringing along the next generation? will present on the importance of) of connecdiversity in the STEM workplace. She will discuss initiatives to improve gender balance\, to support women who are currently employed and how to encourage those in younger generations to consider careers in STEM. \n2- Technology is just one aspect of Connected Health will discuss how technology is only one component (and sometimes a lesser componentted health implementation! But\, this is not always clear to people who see technology as a solution to ‘their’ problem. Without consideration and inclusion of the other four components – healthcare pathways\, regulations and standards\, people\, and data – it is very unlikely that Patient-centred healthcare can be successfully delivered through the technology implementation. \nBio of the speaker: Ita is a Professor of Software Quality in the Department of Computer Science and Information Systems at the University of Limerick\, a Co-Principal Investigator in Lero – the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software\, and a Principal Investigator in the Ageing Research Centre in UL. She leads projects on Connected Health\, Global Software Engineering\, and Gender issues in STEM. Ita has over 200 publications\, has supervised 21 PhD students to completion and is currently supervising 3 PhD students. She has received funding for her research from a variety of agencies including Science Foundation Ireland\, Irish Research Council\, European Union and Enterprise Ireland.  Her collaborators have included IBM\, Ocuco and Johnson & Johnson\, and public bodies such as University Hospital Limerick Group and the Irish Health Service Executive. She is a security\, mobile\, wireless\, networking\, and Internet of Things (IoT) strategist. She has been driving business and technology innovation\, from incubation to prototyping to validation\, and is currently an entrepreneur and consultant in Silicon Valley. She has worked for service providers and technology companies in various key leadership roles. She defined the reference framework for the Future Internet Assembly and was one of the early critical contributors to the Internet of Things. She is also an expert member of governmental working groups and cross-continental forums. She was also one of the key contributors to the commercialization of WLAN.
